According to various web dictionaries, the definition of implementation is:

This last one is my personal favorite. As a productivity expert, nothing warms up my heart more than seeing how you can take marketing concepts and actually make it happen, bring it to life, and reap the rewards every day. After all, what's the point of reading marketing and self-help books, spending hours reading and taking copious notes, if you are not going to do something about it all?

If you ask me, if you don't put into action what you've learned, you've just wasted hours of your time and energy. It probably sounds a little harsh, but nothing upsets me more, than seeing designers get top notch, practical, actionable knowledge and not act on it starting immediately.

Why is it that so many designers fail to act on what they've learned?

I've thought about it long and hard, and was able to come up with several reasons. See if any of these sound familiar.

Don't make it a priority. Ok, so you've listed to the experts, read marketing materials, listened to telecourses, attended seminars, thought that it was great information, and decided to start, say, an e-zine. Great! Good job. Next day, you happen to have a client appointment. From there you drive to the design center. Find special fabrics. Next day you go back to the client and finalize the order. Next day, you work through the details of that order and place everything with your vendors. However, the following day, you find out that one of the fabrics is discontinued. Frustrating, I know. So you talk to the client, drive to the design center, go back to the client, and go through the ordering process again.

Add to that managing e-mails, dealing with contractors, attending your weekly networking event, opening newly-arrived packages, installing, following up on previous orders and clients, and dealing with issues that are so ever-present in the custom business. Oh, and you also have a life-life, where you have to tend to kids, make dinner, manage the house, kiss your husband once in a while, catch up with a friend, oh and smell the roses. What was it that you were hoping to get done? Ah, it was an e-zine. Ok, you say to yourself, I'll do it next week. Next week rolls around and somehow it never comes up high enough on your priority list.

It's uncomfortable. Let's use the example of "speaking to get new clients". You learned that speaking is one of THE best ways to get new clients. But speaking is uncomfortable. It can be down-right scary. Plus it feels like a lot of work to ask your past clients or to go out and find partners. So you put it off, and put it off, and put it off. Until it just somehow falls off the to-do list all-together.

Don't know how to begin. There is a lot of marketing information out there. Some of it is new to you, some of it is familiar. All of it is important and critical to your success and growth as a designer. But if you're overwhelmed with the amount of information, HOW do you even know what to tackle first? What will bring you the "biggest bang for your buck"? You may be sitting at your desk right now, thinking over everything that you 'should be doing', feeling completely overwhelmed, numb even, and unsure what you should concentrate on.
